Chef Concierge
Welcome to The Sutton Place Hotel Halifax. My name is James, and I am the Chef Concierge.
I am also a member of Les Clefs d’Or, an organization of professional hotel concierges. There are over 4,000 concierges in this prestigious federation, and I am proud to be the only member in the Atlantic Region.
It’s September and that means harvest season and the best time for a day trip to the Annapolis Valley. In just one hour from the city, you can be in Grand Pre and the Wolfville area. Here you will find quaint small towns, farmer’s markets, quiet country roads and beautiful vineyards. During this time of year, the markets will be stocked with fresh local produce and local art. You will even see roadside stands at edge of farmer’s fields where you can make your purchases on the honour system…simply take what you need and put your cash in the jar!!
I recommend a stop at Hennigar’s and Noggins, my favourite markets in the area.
There are now over a dozen vineyards in the Annapolis Valley. The area produces a nice selection of whites and is getting to be well known for sparkling wines as well. Benjamin Bridge and Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards are two of my favourites.
Benjamin Bridge is set on a beautiful plot of vines on the rolling hills behind Wolfville. Walk among the vines with a glass of Riesling or Tidal Bay (Nova Scotia’s Appellation) or find a cozy place to sit with wine and a light bite in the many seating areas on the estate. Lightfoot and Wolfville is located on the main street of Grand Pre and offers a bright and modern tasting room and a full menu for lunch or dinner. You can’t go wrong with the Tidal Bay or a nice Pinot Noir and be sure to try their wood-fired pizza!
If you are looking for one final stop before returning to the city, I suggest a quick visit to Tangled Garden. This garden and gift shop is very unique. Wander among the many flowers, fruits and herbs and then stop by the gift shop to purchase (or sample) the jams, jellies, vinegars and chutneys. All products are made with the ingredients grown on site. It doesn’t get more local.
I hope you enjoy your day in the valley as much as I do.
Please tap the concierge button on your phone or stop by the lobby and see me if I can further assist.
Enjoy Halifax!
